Alonzo “Higgie” Higgins, 68, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018 after a brief illness.He was born in Akron on July 6, 1949. Alonzo was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving during the Viet Nam War. He worked for Metro Transit, Owner/Operator of Chem-Dry Carpet Cleaning, Welcast Plastics, Prestwick Country Club, and until his passing his son’s lawn business, Pat’s Pro Lawn and Acme #14. He and Patrick enjoyed remote car racing for many years, where they met and became friends with many. He had a gift of fixing, tinkering, remodeling and building anything from dog houses, fences, decks to garages.Preceded in death by his father, Lonnie Higgins; mother and step-father,Wilma Jean (Hughes) and Paul Bair; sister, Patty Greising and brother, Michael E. Higgins. Alonzo is survived by his son, Patrick (Ashley Griffin); sister, Sandy (Dave) Popiel; nephews and nieces, Michael (Laurie) Shaffer, Robin (Jeff) Casey, Tabitha and Ray Greising, Nicholas, Erika and Michael Higgins Jr.; along with great-nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends and of course his best girl, his “grand-dogger”, Miley.Funeral service will be held Friday, February 23rd at 12:30 p.m. at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home, 566 W. Park Ave., Barberton 44203 with Pastor Mike Prebynski officiating. Burial at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery with military honors. Alonzo’s family will receive friends on Thursday, February 22nd from 6 to 8 p.m.In lieu of flowers memorials donations may be made to Pawsibilities Humane Society of Greater Akron, 7996 Darrow Road, Twinsburg, Ohio 44087.
