Barberton - Harold K. “Sam" Shifferly of Barberton, 92, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 surround by his loving family. He was born in Orrville, Ohio to the late Emmit and Edna (Miller) Shifferly on June 15, 1924. Following graduation from Orrville High School, he joined the Navy in 1943. Harold served on the (DE 157) USS Fechteler escorting convoys across the Atlantic to support the war effort. The USS Fechteler was sunk on May 5, 1944 by a torpedo from a German submarine in the Mediterranean Sea. Harold survived his injuries and was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, Harold married Catharine Deibel on September 21, 1946. Harold worked for the First National Bank of Akron (FirstMerit) retiring in 1987 as the manager of the Norton Branch. He was a member of the St. Augustine Church, active with the Knights of Columbus, Holy Hour program and church usher. He was a past president of the Norton Kiwanis. After retirement, Sam and Catharine traveled and spent time with their family. In his later years, he traveled to Washington, DC on the Honor Flight and visited the USS Slater in Albany, NY. The USS Slater was the sister ship to the USS Fechteler. Sam was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Catharine, his parents and brothers, William, Robert and sister Helen. Sam is survived by his children James (Val), Linda (Dave) Dohner, Sue (Randy) Hart, Ken (Marti), Dave (Cathy), Dennis (Sharon) and Janet (Brett) Haverlick. Sam had 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces and friends. Special thanks to Dawn, his nurse, caregivers, Kathy, Kate and Luke, his grandson. Prayers will be Monday 9:30 a.m. at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home, 566 W. Park Ave., Barberton 44203 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 204 6th St., N.W., Barberton at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Clinton Cemetery. Sam’s family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
