David “Dave” Shifferly, 68, passed away peacefully in his home Monday, October 23, 2023 after a year-long battle with cancer. David bravely and valiantly fought this insidious disease all the while keeping an optimistic outlook and showing everyone around him courage, love and compassion. David walked through life flashing an infectious smile making all those around him laugh and feel at ease with his quick wit and easy manner. David never met a stranger who didn't become a friend after knowing him. David is preceded in death by parents Harold and Catharine Shifferly and mother-in-law Margie Lynn. He is survived by his beloved wife; Cathy Lynn Shifferly brother to Jim (Valerie) Shifferly, Kenneth (Marti) Shifferly, Linda (Dave) Dohner, Susan (Randy) Hart, Dennis (Sharon) Shifferly, and Janet (Brett) Haverlick, and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. David and Cathy married in 2001 enjoying 22 wonderful years together after meeting at the 356th Bombadiers Squadron in N. Canton. Cathy soon fell in love with Dave's blue eyes and infectious smile. They both graduated high school in 1973 and had no previous marriages. They lived together in Barberton in the beautiful house Dave built in his mid-30’s. Dave served several years as altar boy at St. Augustines' Church in Barberton. In his pre-teens, David worked mowing lawns and pulling weeds and in his teens he caddied at the Rosemont Country Club. In 1981, he started his business; National Equipment Sales, buying and selling new and rebuilt diesel engines for industrial use. It was not unusual for him to work through the night and sleep at his shop and also to work through weekends when first starting out as he was driven to succeed. Dave grew his business in Clinton, OH to 3 buildings (over 150,000 square feet) selling internationally, although David preferred to keep the business small, employing only family throughout the years. Daniel Shifferly, nephew of David, will continue to manage the business along with Cathy, David's wife. David was known for his generosity to family and strangers alike. David helped his parents build a new home at about the same time as he built his own in Barberton. David stepped in and helped family without being asked and never refused a request for assistance. He helped most of his and Cathy's family members at one time or another over the years financially and with hands-on support. Dave worried about and took care of family and friends dear to him. Dave’s family will receive friends on Saturday, October 28, 2023 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home, 566 W. Park Ave., Barberton with a memorial service at 5 p.m. Celebration of Life will be held at 6 p.m. at Guy's Party Center at 500 E. Waterloo Rd., Akron, Ohio 44319.
