Florence Betty (Gombos) Thomas

Florence Betty Thomas (née Gombos), 93, beloved mother, (great-, great-great-) grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, April 16, 2022. Florence was born in Barberton, OH, on September 15, 1928, to Julia and Stephen Gombos. She lived in Barberton until 1969, when she moved to the Whitehall neighborhood of Columbus, OH, where she made a home and raised her three dearly loved daughters, Karrol (Henry) Walters, Brenda (Bernard Joseph) Simcoe, and Rebecca (Kenneth Brian) Nunes, and later cared for and spent time with her cherished (great-, great-great-) grandchildren: Deanna (Adam) Mooney, Joey (Sally) Simcoe, Emily (Edward L. Allen III) Walters, Anna, William,  A.J. (Breanne) Mooney, Joey, Tori, Savana, Maddox, C.J., Isabelle, and Hastella. A devout Christian and lifelong Baptist, she attended Westphal Avenue Baptist Church in Whitehall and the Akron Baptist Temple when she lived in Barberton. Florence was a prayer warrior who fiercely loved and prayed for her family. She always had room in her heart for those around her and lived the Word daily: "What doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God" (Micah 6:8). She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her parents, Julia (née Garges) and Stephen Gombos, and her sisters and brothers: Steven John Gombos, Joseph Gombos, Anna Gombos Taylor, Louis Gombos, Martha Gombos Porter, David Gombos, Julia Gombos Stasko. She goes before her sisters Delores Gombos Davis and Helen Gombos Dimitroff. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home (566 W. Park Avenue, Barberton, Ohio 44203).  A graveside committal will immediately follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery (2580 Romig Road, Akron, OH 44320). Calling hours are 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the funeral home on Saturday, April 23, 2022 preceding the service.
