Gary Edward Johns

Gary Edward Johns, 70, of New Franklin, Ohio, passed away in the early morning of Thursday, August 8, 2024, at his home, surrounded by loved ones after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer.He was born on February 22, 1954, in Akron, Ohio. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Gary was a 1972 graduate of Ellet High School.  He was a lifelong resident of the area, settling in New Franklin for the last 20 years of his life. Gary was an entrepreneur and a jack-of-all-trades. He started his career in his early 20s, working in a print shop, and later founded his own landscaping company, FYS Maintenance Services, which he proudly managed until his final days. He loved cooking, watching sitcoms, traveling, and playing penny slots at the casinos.  Every road trip was filled will many snacks and “no music”, as Gary believed road trips were meant for talking. There wasn’t a household problem he couldn’t fix, and he never hesitated to help loved ones with their own home repair challenges. His real joy in life came from bringing smiles to those around him. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Janice Johns. He leaves behind his wife and partner of over 20 years, Melissa (Boylen) Johns; his children, Shannon (Paul) Hornacek, Kelley Johns, Nikki Johns (Frankie), and Steven (Kaylee) Johns; stepsons, Michael (Krystal) Sommers and Sheldon (Sabrina) Sommers; and grandchildren, Paul Jr., Charlie, Sam, Jayden, Ellie, and Bentley; in-laws, Carl and Pam Boylen.  Also included in his legacy are numerous cousins, family members, and friends. Calling hours will be held Thursday, August 15, 2024 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home (566 W. Park Ave., Barberton, OH 44203), with a small informal service immediately following.
