We are saddened by the sudden death of Jim Drain, 78. He passed away Saturday, December 7, 2024, due to complications from a surgery. Jim was born on September 8, 1946, in Bowling Green, Ohio. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joyce; his children, Traci Sano, Melanie (Donnie) Kraft, and Kevin Drain; his sisters, Verneda Eileen Freeze and Nancy Drain; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Verneda Drain and his sister, Barbara Drain. Jim recently retired from BWXT where he was a treasured employee for over 50 years. A graduate of Kent State University, his high school years were spent in Beaver, Pennsylvania where he was in marching band and the jazz band, “Beaver Bobcats,” as a pianist. He was a lifelong, versatile musician playing in numerous bands such as The Akron Big Band, DJ’s Rock ‘n Roll Big Band, NEO Jazz Orchestra, Vermilion WindJammers Big Band, The Jazz Workshop, Memphis Cradle, Greased Lightning, Class of ’57, Jimmy Rich Band, The Belmonts, New Orleans Stompers, and Not Quite Saints to name a few. A professional musician for over 60 years, Jim’s talent touched many people’s lives. Jim was always in demand because of his extensive knowledge and experience. Literally, he was the “Keyman” whenever he played because he made himself available to encourage other musicians and to supply music, equipment, or advice. Jim enjoyed traveling, often with friends. His generosity was unmatched. It was not uncommon for him to drive to Vermilion, Pittsburgh, and beyond for a gig if needed. He also played in Memphis, Nashville, and Orlando.Through the years, Jim was active in many sports. He loved softball, tennis, bowling, and golfing in various leagues. As a member of the Barberton Moose, he served as secretary managing golf league play. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life to be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Barberton Moose. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home, 566 West Park Avenue, Barberton, Ohio 44203 to help with final expenses. Overall, Jim was a man who enjoyed life…Good Times, Good Food, and Good Beer! He will be missed by everyone who knew him. Cheers, Jim! We loved you!
