Nancy Kelley passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 31st 2023 at the age of 69, after a long battle with cancer. Throughout her cancer journey, Nancy retained her positive outlook, steadfastly insisted she had a lucky life, and smiled with joy frequently, even in her final months. Born in Barberton, Nancy studied history at the College of Wooster, and then received her law degree from the University of Akron. She spent her entire career in public service, first in Akron for Summit County and later in Cleveland for the federal government. After retiring, she had more time to travel and to spend time as what she called a “modern quilter,” using her energy and creativity to make dozens of beautiful quilts for friends, families and acquaintances. Her travels took her frequently to California, and also to far-flung places like Tokyo, Sydney, and Dublin. In her final decade, Nancy spent a great deal of time caring for her aging mother and father, helping them live independently well into their nineties. She also continuously helped and supported others with a spirit of generosity and love that endeared her to everyone around her. Nancy was preceded in death by her father James, and her mother Martha. She is survived by her brother David, her brother Tom (Yumi), her sister Wendy (J.R.) Swindol, her nephew Sean (Emily), her nieces Maya (Osman) and Clara, as well as her Aunt Jeanne and cousins in Ohio and beyond. Nancy requested to be cremated with no formal memorial services. Nancy was at the center of a close-knit family and a remarkable group of girlfriends who were at her side throughout the last year, up to her final moments. Nancy’s family is deeply grateful to those friends who were so helpful in her time of need. She will be greatly missed.
