Olan Lewis Koehler

Olan Lewis Koehler, 86, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2023. He was born July 20, 1937 in Minford, Ohio to the late Edger L. and Evelyn E. Koehler. Olan was a 1955 graduate of Ames-Bern High School. He was a graduate of Ohio University in 1959 with a BS in education and a master’s degree in history and government. While at Ohio University he was commissioned as an Army Officer after completing the ROTC program in 1959 and finished his Army career as a Captain. Olan taught Government, History, Geography, English and Constitutional Law for Barberton City Schools.He also was a faculty manager for 36 years at Barberton High School. After retiring he continued to work in the Athletic Department for many years. Sports were a major part of his life. He was an All-State High School basketball player and in college he played basketball his freshman year at O.U. Olan was inducted into the Barberton Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and became a lifetime member of the All Sports Boosters in 2004. He received the Rudy Sharkey Magic’s Pride Award in 2019. He is survived by his wife, Sally; children, Eric (Dimitra) Koehler and Kimberly Behner; granddaughter, Alyssa Marie Koehler; sibling, Lowell Hubert (Gloria) Koehler; sister-in-law, Anita Breeze and many friends. Olan’s funeral service will be held Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 12 Noon at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home, 566 W. Park Ave., Barberton with Rev. Rod Grabski officiating.  Burial to follow with military honors at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. His family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 13th from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of one’s choice   in memory of Olan.
